Playroom | ORC Fall 2021: Week 3
This week I started working on the focal piece of the room. Since this space is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door, I wanted it to stand out beyond just being a playroom. I was inspired by Alena’s arch wall feature and wanted to do something similar.
I loved the colors I used for my #TrashToTerracotta project, and since I had leftover paint I was able to throw up some samples on the wall. I ended up choosing Behr’s Terra Cotta Clay.
Once I had my color, it was time to prep my space. I used this handy tutorial for drawing my arch, and it worked perfectly.
- First I measured how wide I wanted the whole thing to be and taped that off
- Next I determined the top arch point and measured out a piece of string that was from the top point of the arch to the top point of the rectangle.
- I attached the string to a pencil and used it to trace my arch shape by pinning it to the wall with a thumbtack.
I used an angled brush to carefully paint the arch and used a roller to do the rest. Two coats of paint and it was done by the end of the weekend.
Toddler approved. 👍🏼 Next steps for the arch include putting a little planter shelf or two up top.
I ordered her table and chairs, which should be arriving within the next week or two. The shelf I want from IKEA is currently out of stock everywhere, so I’m hoping it will come back within the next few weeks. If not, I’ll have to decide how badly I want it and come up with a plan b.
Everything else seems to be coming together quite nicely for this space, so I just might have time to give the kitchen set a little DIY spruce. We shall see!

I love this update. If you’re looking for the Montessori shelves from Ikea (I was), I snagged a few from Etsy (from DTWoodDesignDesignProducts) for not too much $$. If you order now, these might get here in time to for the ORC finish date. I purchased on 9/28 and they arrived yesterday. Heads up, I think they do need some sort of finish, either paint or a clear varnish.
Thank you, Lisa for your suggestion! This led me down the rabbit hole of looking at Montessori shelves on Etsy, and I think I found one I am going to go with. 😊
