For YEARS I’ve been creating my annual holiday wish list on Amazon. Every time I deviated to a different platform I always came back. But now this year I’m sad to say it no longer does what I need it to do. Instead, I’ve switched to Notion.
Why did I switch from a platform I loved and even continue to do my shopping on? Earlier this year Amazon took away a key piece of functionality: the ability to add items from any website. ☹️
First, they discontinued the Amazon Assistant Chrome extension which allowed you to add items outside of Amazon to your wish list, among other functionality. Then they got rid of the Save an Idea feature which was another way you can add non-Amazon items or just a generalized idea (e.g. “I really like fuzzy warm socks!”).
Last year I got hooked on Notion, and since then I’ve been finding new ways to mold it to my exact needs. It seemed only fitting to create a wish list template, so here’s a look at my wish list hub.
Inside My Notion Wish List
Since my wish list is shared with several people who have varying levels of “tech-savviness” it was important to keep the look and feel minimal. My Wish List is simply a page with two columns and an inline gallery database.
The two columns contain information about me such as hobbies, interests, clothing sizes, etc. Then the gallery database has the actual wish list items.
There are properties for entering the price, priority, the store, indicating if the item is in-store or online, and reference URL. And then I can add any additional details, notes, etc. on the page.
The nice part about having my wish list in Notion is I’m not limited by the platform’s functionality. Notion lets me customize the experience so I can be as general or as specific with my wish list items.
Not only did I create one for myself, but I created one for my kids and one for my husband. I then created a central family wish page with all our lists linked. This way I can share it with family all in one spot.
